Kiteboarding
Kite Worldwide and
Kite Zanzibar operate an in house kite centre at
Red Monkey Lodge. For those who don’t know, Zanzibar is growing to become a world level kite destination. The sandbank in front of Red Monkey Lodge is an ideal location for beginner courses, whereas expert kiters can go to play on the reefbreaks (inquire at the reception for downwinders in the best kite spots on the island, beginner courses as well as about advance tutoring).
The conditions on Zanzibar can be perfect, the best months are half of June until end of September and December until February. The wind is always side onshore. In June -September from the south-east, in December from the north-east. The average wind speed is around 15 knots, in the evenings mostly increasing. The kitesize which are used most are 12, 10 and 9 meters. The water temperature is always over 77 degrees F so a wet-suite can stay at home, shoes can be taken, but not used al lot. Snorkeling And Scuba Diving
The manager of Red Monkey is a certified dive instructor with hundreds of dives around East Africa and he will be happy to suggest itineraries to you according to conditions and your experience level. The reef in front of Red Monkey hosts some of East Africa’s finest corals and you can dive on slopes, walls and overhangs. The shallow lagoon in the inside reef is perfect for beginners and snorkelers and a great spot for night diving.
During the ideal seasons (February through April and September through December) you may find visibility of up to 40m, and even in the more windy season it is seldom less than 15m. Water temperatures are between 78 and 82 degrees F. Inquire for daily double dives, single and night dives to the best sites around the island, beginner to advanced courses can be arranged with our partner diving school, that according to tides can pick up and/or offload on the beach in front of the lodge. Ask them about their special dive excursions on the east coast and north, or multi-day trips to Mafia and Pemba.
