The City Of Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert Announces The 2nd Annual Heritage Bowl
Miami Gardens, FL will host The 2nd Annual Heritage Bowl Competition on the Campus of Florida Memorial University The City of Miami Gardens’ Mayor Oliver Gilbert and the Parks and Recreation Department is excited to present their 2015 Black History Celebration Finale . This year’s theme: “ *A Celebration of Black Life, History and Culture”,* represents the accomplishments, contributions and advancements made by African-Americans over the last century since the inception of the celebration of Black History Month. The 2015 Black History Heritage Bowl will culminate the month on February 24, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. on the historic campus ofFlorida Memorial University, in the Lou Rawls Auditorium, located at 15800 NW 42nd Avenue, Miami Gardens, FL 33056, as a great opportunity for Miami-Dade senior high and middle schools students to demonstrate their mastery of Black History facts in efforts to win monetary prizes and the coveted Carter G. Woodson Achievement Award. The structure of the Bowl is an academic quiz style tournament designed to increase and test student’s knowledge of Black History. Schools have the opportunity to form teams of 6 students who will compete in a round-robin tournament against neighboring schools. The preliminary rounds begin at 10:00 a.m. Ultimately, the top 2 schools in each division will compete in a final round of competition beginning at 2:00 pm for the title of “Mayor Oliver Gilbert’s Heritage Bowl Champions.” Local professionals will act as moderators for the rounds by showcasing their “Alex Trebek” skills as they pose questions to the students. WSVN’s anchor for Today in Florida, Danielle Knox , HOT105 DJ Rick Party , Mayor Oliver Gilbert and other community leaders are a few of the moderators scheduled to participate. The City of Miami Gardens and corporate sponsors Florida Memorial University , Publix Charities Foundation , and Annette Willis Insurance Company are pleased to invite the community to this free academic competition. About The City of Miami Gardens Miami Gardens is located in north-central Miami-Dade County, Florida. Its boundaries stretch from I-95 and NE 2nd Street on the East, to NW 47th and NW 57th Avenues on the West, and from the Broward County line on the North, to 151st Street on the South. There are an estimated 110,000 residents in the City and it is the largest city in Florida that has a majority Black population.
