Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina - the newest luxury private-island resort in the
British Virgin Islands - has partnered with
Pack for a Purpose, whose mission is to positively impact communities around the world by helping travelers make meaningful contributions to destinations they visit. Through this partnership, Scrub Island Resort has chosen to support the
BVI Autism Centre, which is dedicated to supporting families affected by autism spectrum disorders. To participate, travelers coming to Scrub Island Resort need only dedicate as little as five pounds of their available luggage allowance for supplies requested by the Autism Centre, such as books, toys, art supplies, and other items. Guests who choose to bring more than 5 pounds, may bring as much as they're inspired to. Guests simply unpack when they arrive at the resort and the supplies are taken directly to the BVI Autism Centre. The BVI is the 55th country registered to support Pack for a Purpose and Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina is the first lodging partner to offer the program in the area. A full list of requested supplies can be found at

"We're proud to be partnering with Pack for a Purpose and hope we're the first of many to do so here in the BVI," says Scott Ward, director of Sales and Marketing for Scrub Island Resort. "Many of our guests are very involved in philanthropies and charities at home, and this new program offers an easy and enormously rewarding way for them to extend their generosity to this island community they love."
Supplies brought in by Scrub Island Resort guests will go to the BVI Autism Centre, which was established in 2012 and provides services to persons with autism to aid them in reaching their full potential. The Centre offers a safe and nurturing environment in which children and adults receive individualized support towards the achievement of their personalized goals, particularly in the areas of cognitive, social, and life skills. Adults receive training in functional literacy and numeracy as well as social and independent living skills. Early intervention is provided for young children and all children participate in sessions which aid their language development, cognitive skills, social skills or whatever other skills need to be developed. The staff at the Centre also offers support to families and schools in the form of training, modeling of good practice, and making of resources.
The idea behind Pack for a Purpose formed during founders Rebecca and Scott Rothney's first trip to Africa, when they realized they had more than 100 pounds of available luggage space based on the airline's allowance. By contacting their safari company they were able to identify a local school and filled the remainder of their luggage with badly needed supplies. Saving travelers in similar situations the time and effort of researching and locating local organizations in need, they created Pack for a Purpose, which identifies partner organizations, sets a feasible minimum weight (5 pounds) for supplies, and secures local accommodations as drop-off points.
