AIPC, the
International Association of Congress Centres, the industry association for professional convention and exhibition center managers worldwide recognized the
Orange County Convention Center as one of the top centers in the world. AIPC made the announcement at the
2012 AIPC Annual Conference in Amsterdam from amongst a group of 18 finalists who had qualified for the competition.
The Royal College of Physicians in London took the top prize as "World’s Best Congress Centre". The AIPC Board also recognized the three runners-up to this year’s award: the
Belfast Waterfront, the
Convention Centre Dublin and the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando.
The Apex Award is AIPC's highest form of recognition, and recognizes the member center that has achieved the rating of "The World's Best Congress Centre" in an evaluation carried out annually by an international university.
“It is such an honor being chosen as one of the best convention centers in the world,” said
Jan Addison, chief financial officer, Orange County Convention Center. “I would like to thank AIPC, our clients who assisted in this process, the OCCC team, and our business partners who all demonstrate they are truly the Center of Hospitality. Going above and beyond expectations is our goal for each and every event. It is also a signal to the trade-show industry that Orlando is a leader in the convention market and will continue to be as further improvements transpire in and around the convention center."
The news comes during one of the most successful quarters in the history of the OCCC. More than 77 events already took place at the OCCC this year including the
NPE2012, National Plastics Exposition in July. That show attracted more than 55,000 attendees and 1,933 exhibiting companies making it one of the largest shows utilizing 2.1 million sq. ft. of exhibition space.
